We want to extend a big congratulations to Hilltopper Abbie Brewer, Program Manager at the Montrose FRC, for her nomination as a 2023 Woman of Distinction! This award is presented to women in the community who play an important role economically and socially. Awards are presented to nominees who represent local businesses, government, education, and non-profit fields. Hear more from Abbie below!
What does it mean to you to be nominated as a Woman of Distinction?
“Being nominated as a Woman of Distinction means you have been seen in a big way! It feels like the community stood up and said,” Abbie, we see all the work you are doing and we appreciate it.” I was among several women who were nominated, and just being able to sit beside so many other rock star women in the community was an honor!”
What “requirements” to be nominated resonate with you or make you feel proud/excited to have been selected?
“I have no idea who even nominated me. Tonya, CEO of Our Town Matters is the woman who started the Women of Distinction celebration in the Montrose Community. She told me a “few” people nominated me.
My hope is that the requirement for a woman to be nominated is a woman who truly loves her community, is not afraid to help find solutions, advocates for those who might not have a voice, and is willing to have an open heart and mind.”
What is something you are passionate about in your position with Hilltop?
“I have only been at Hilltop for a short time (a little le over a year) and have had the opportunity to bring my passion with me. Over the last year, I have been able to help develop plans and execute programs to help fill some gaps around housing stability in the Montrose Region. I am truly passionate about housing first, empowering others, and believe that to reduce child abuse and neglect in our region we have to be committed to housing and empowering others.”
What is something you’re passionate about outside of work?
“I am trying to do better at balancing my work and “outside of work” passions. I recently started Acrylic Paint Pouring, I am a mother of 4, and a new grandmother. I enjoy visiting the Ocean as much as my pocketbook will allow.”
When you picture the perfect future for your community, what does it look like?
“My picture-perfect community looks like neighbors helping neighbors. Racism, Homophobia and Sexism don’t exist and ice cream socials include dairy- free options and happen weekly!”
