Mercedes Castro joined the Connections team as part of the Karis to Hilltop transition. Her commitment to serving unhoused youth/young adults in our community is unwavering as is her dedication to the Connections team.

Mercedes has a contagious gentleness about her that is fully backed by a relentless commitment to doing the right thing- which is rarely the easy thing. Integrity is her middle name. Mercedes is a fierce advocate for the people who live in our Permanent Supportive Housing while consistently modeling accountability, responsibility and kindness. This relationship building skill is an integral part of what helps our residents feel a sense of safety and belonging. She creates a culture of inclusivity where everyone feels welcomed. All the people Mercedes serves leave our programming with a memory of an experience with a caring adult. No matter how difficult the situation, our residents know, unequivocally, that Mercedes wants only the best for them. It’s a guarantee, they all leave with a deep appreciation of her sense of humor, her sweet giggle and her gentle presence.

The transition from Karis to Hilltop, while welcomed, was not easy. Mercedes continually seeks out opportunities to grow as a leader in our team, as a manager in the program and as a professional in our community representing Hilltop. She welcomes transparent honest feedback and never shy’s away from a difficult conversation. Mercedes takes struggles as a pathway to peace.

Mercedes models the changes she wants to see in the world. Her actions are selfless. She is motivated by a genuine desire to have every person she serves have the same opportunity to transform adversity into opportunity. Her courage is contagious.
