Shelley Martin has been a volunteer with the Montrose Senior Daybreak for a little more than two years. Shelley became interested in volunteering for Senior Daybreak (formally Day Haven) when she would bring her mother in to utilize their services. Although she still continues to be a caregiver for her mother who has Alzheimer’s, she graciously gives of her time to the program. Shelley volunteers for the respite program 1-2 days a week, for 2-3 hours at a time. “Shelley exemplifies Hilltop’s value of putting people first…and her firsthand experience as a caregiver gives her an insight that is welcome and needed in our program,” says program coordinator, Joy French.
Shelley enriches the lives of program participants with her presence. “When she arrives, the room lights up, and she is smiling and engaging with all participants… she is kind, compassionate and encouraging,” adds Joy. Shelley’s scope of volunteering includes providing reassurance to participants, storytelling, singing, dancing, facilitating craft projects and helping out wherever staff need her. Senior Daybreak is so blessed and grateful to have her as a volunteer. Thank you Shelley!
