Fern Stringham
Fern became a Supporting Our Seniors (SOS) volunteer a little over a year ago and right away she became one of our most active volunteers. Not only can we rely on Fern to take four to five rides per week she is also someone we can call when we are in a pinch. Clients love her so much they have been known to ask for her by name.
Fern has a heart of gold and she shares the wealth with every one of her riders and the SOS staff. We are so lucky to have her as one of our volunteers. One of the first things Fern shared with us was that she grew up in Nicaragua and understood Spanish. Fern having this skill allows the program to keep including and reaching a population that until now, has struggled to serve well because even though we have Spanish speaking staff, we did not have Spanish speaking volunteers.
Fern has never said no to helping a client, even our more challenging rides, and she lights up when she hears the name of a few of our clients. Fern has other commitments in the community but she has a strong commitment to SOS and is willing to provide riders with transportation assistance all over the valley. When Fern is on vacation, the SOS staff has to work hard to make up for the work she does but we are so happy to hear about her sweet grandbaby and family when she comes back.
Thank you Fern for your service to SOS and congratulations on your mission award!
Megann has volunteered for the crisis line for 1 ½ years. She provides on average about 100 hours of service each month. She answers crisis calls with much care and kindness. Megann says that she started volunteering with Latimer House because she knows what it is like to be on the other side of the call and how important it is to have someone there that can help. Megann is a Goodwill Ambassador for Latimer House. She is enthusiastic about the program’s mission and comes to us with ideas of how to promote our services. Last October, she distributed flyers for “Purple Thursday” to downtown businesses to help raise awareness. Megann embodies our values of relationship and fun. She has a natural ability to connect with all different people. She even comes to many of our Hilltop and Latimer events even though she lives in Olathe. Thank you Megann for your dedicated service to Latimer House and congratulations on your mission award!
