“Reduce, reuse, recycle” means more than just throwing old notepaper in the recycle bin (though you needn’t stop doing that). Really think about everything you use. Do you need disposable cups at the water cooler? Can you use the other side of the used sheets of paper you’ve thrown in the recycle bin? Remember to put recycle bags in the car (and take them into the store) when I go grocery shopping.

  • Reducing the amount of waste you produce is the best way to help the environment. Look for items with less packaging. Borrow, rent, or share items that are used infrequently.
  • Reuse: Instead of throwing things away, try to find ways to use them again! Share magazines, books, and craft items.
  • Recycle: Many of the things we use every day, like paper bags, soda cans, and milk cartons, are made out of materials that can be recycled. Recycled items are put through a process that makes it possible to create new products out of the materials from the old ones.

Think about adding a fourth R – Refuse. Simply put: Don’t buy stuff you don’t need. Cut out junk mail, and when you do make a purchase, bring your own bags.
